Spring Break

Hello Everyone,

I hope your spring break is treating you all well. I wanted to write and remind you of two things:

1) Our Science end of year test will be the week we return to school, probably Thursday and the Monday following since we have our Shakespeare performances on Wednesday and Friday. To prepare, I have arranged 6 review tests on alpine.utips.org. Each test contains around 20 questions that test one of the six standards they have learned throughout the year. I am asking that the kids get through these 6 tests this week. They should know their username and login. If not, email me back and I can let you know what it is. Each test should take between 20 and 30 minutes. Please do not complete only half or partial of the test as that will skew my reports. When they get back I will have reports to tell me which areas they are weakest in. If they are too busy this week, we could arrange for them to come during the other track time or recess to get the practice they need.

2) Shakespeare performances will be the Wednesday and Friday of the week we get back. Hamlet will be at 9:55 on both days, Macbeth will be at 10:30 both days, and Midsummer Night's Dream will be at 12:55 both days. They should have arranged to make something this week to contribute to the setting of the play. Their prop will be due on the Monday they get back. Please also make sure that all lines are memorized with expression, pausing, and movement.

Thanks so much for you support with these things. The week they will return will be a little crazy, after this though it will be all downhill.

Hi everyone,

Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Next week we will start school on Tuesday, so I hope you enjoy your 3 day weekend.
Grades were sent home along with some middle school registration stuff. Tuesday, March 11th, will also be the night they go to the middle school to turn the paperwork in from 3-6:30. If you can't go then, you could also go the next day same time.
Tuesday will also be the day they take the 6th grade basic skills test that will give us a better idea about where students should be for middle school math.

Next Friday is "pi" day (3.14). In the past I had an activity that went along with some curriculum. Circles and "pi" has moved to 7th grade, but I still like to invite students to bring a pie in to share. I was also hoping I could get someone to run to costco for us and pick up some pizza. If the kids bring in a dollar, I invite them to lunch with me to feast on some Costco pizza. Let me know if you are interested.
Thanks so much! Have a great weekend and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Hi Everyone,

Hope you all had a wonderful 3 day weekend.

This week we are going to continue our study of The Westing Game and Shakespeare.

We will also have our essay on myaccess.com be due this coming Thursday on whether or not we should allow cell phones at schools. The students all know how to log on, so it might be a nice activity to ask them to read to you what they have written. Each day they get to work on their essays for 30 minutes. Let me know if you have any questions on this.

We will continue to work on algebra. They are venturing into solving inequalities right now. This is coming slowly, but we will work hard to make sure everyone understands how to do what we are trying to do. I know I have been gone a lot this year. I really want to be accessible to you, though. If you have any questions about curriculum, will you please email me. I am collecting quite the collection of videos for my library that can be found here. This helps me know which concepts need additional instruction and gets me to get the video library built up.

Anyway, let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks!

Mr. Emett

Valentine's Day

This Friday we will have our 6th grade Valentine's Talent show. If you would really like to perform again for the 6th grade, please let me know. Also, if you would like to see someone else perform again, let me know and I can talk to that person about doing their talent again.
I am including students first names in case you would like to send Valentines for exchange. This is not a requirement, but we will have time in class to exchange if you want. We will also have a little treat for the kids to eat and while they are exchanging Valentines.

Mr. Emett Update

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! This week we will continue working on percents. The focus is to establish percents as ratios out of 100. On homework I am asking students to establish their percents as ratios out of 100 and then use scale factors and unit rates to reason about problems. Here is an example of what I am talking about.
For reading we are continuing our work with Greek Gods. This is a challenging text that we are taking at a modest pace. Please continue to have your child read 30 minutes a day and insist it takes place. Please make sure their home reading is something they understand and choose themselves.

We will start working on our Shakespeare scripts this week. They are becoming familiar with the stories and will also start thinking about parts and script.

They are working with Mrs. Cook for science right now. If you have any questions, please email her at jtcook@alpinedistrict.org.

Thanks, you are wonderful to work with! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
