Mr. Emett Update

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! This week we will continue working on percents. The focus is to establish percents as ratios out of 100. On homework I am asking students to establish their percents as ratios out of 100 and then use scale factors and unit rates to reason about problems. Here is an example of what I am talking about.

For reading we are continuing our work with Greek Gods. This is a challenging text that we are taking at a modest pace. Please continue to have your child read 30 minutes a day and insist it takes place. Please make sure their home reading is something they understand and choose themselves.

We will start working on our Shakespeare scripts this week. They are becoming familiar with the stories and will also start thinking about parts and script.

HW For Spring Break

I wanted to remind everyone of what I expect this week for homework. 

1- Memorize at least 5 lines from your Shakespeare script. Whole thing if possible. Here is a link to each script in case you didn't get it.

2-Create 1 prop for your play. Be creative...Be creative...Be Creative. Think of the needs of your play. Think of your character. There are a lot of possibilities.

3- Read everyday. Work on book club. Book club is due on Tuesday when we return.

Week Before Spring Break

Hi everyone,

We have one more week until spring break. Yahh! Let's try and finish out strong! The goal this week is to learn how to find the surface area and volume of rectangular and triangular prisms and pyramids. Here is a quick video to learn the difference. We also want to finish our Shakespeare scripts by adding at least 5 lines to your character and 3 lines for someone else's character. We will start a new book for book club, you will be able to read this during spring break.

I have a cartoon video for each of the plays so you can see a version played out. This should also help you finish the script by this Thursday and help you get an idea of how you want to act it. You will be able to access the movies at school as well. This way, you can have the script along side you as it plays.

WHAT MAKES A CHEETAH SO FAST????

Cheetahs are commonly know as the fastest land animal in the world!! Have you ever wondered why?? Well this story is gonna tell you exactly why. Hope you enjoy.

Cheetahs have special areodinamics which are...... there natural claws and skinny legs. They also have large eyes,  black lining and big nostrils. Along with there flexible spine,tail and powerful legs!!

The cheetahs naturally long claws dig into the ground alowing it to switch direction quickly. much like football cleats dig into the ground to juke someone. These long skinny legs make it so that there not caring extra whieght around slowing them down. :)

Have you ever wondered what black lining does?? Well it protects the cheetahs eyes from the sun and going blind/ so they can see ahead of them, and run as fast as possible.

These large eyes make  it so when the sun is blocked out they can see every place in there suroundings. Cheetahs big nostrils make so they can inhale oxygen and out hale carbione dioxide out faster.

With the flexible spine they have it acts like a spring boinging up and down!!! This spine is what makes it jump farther along with the long legs. I think we all need cheetah tail because there tails are used for balance.. The tail makes it so when they do really sharp turns they dont spin out of control!!!

Trimester 3 Update

I just wanted to summarize what the next few weeks will be like before spring break. 

We have assigned parts for our Shakespeare plays. We will be doing three plays: Macbeth (Sadie is primary script writer), Hamlet (Ben is primary script writer), and A Midsummer Night's Dream (Alyx is primary script writer). Each of the students have a retelling of the play that needs to be read and summarized into a storyboard with captions. Inside the storyboard needs to have how the characters react to how the plot unfolds. This requires a lot of inference and will help prepare themselves for how they should act when they begin rehearsing. The storyboard is the book club assignment for the week. I have also postponed the deadline to Wednesday the 20th.

The writing assignment this week will be to contribute at least 5 lines to your Shakespeare's character on the google drive script. 

In math, I hope to have geometry finished. We will start to cover calculating surface area and volume. I also want to have the fractions quiz and ratios quiz done and caught up for everyone by Spring break. 

We will have an easter egg party with a lower grade class about theoretical probability, ratios, and percent. This will be Friday, March 29th. More details to follow on how to help out with this.

What is a Zebra?

                What is a Zebra?
     Zebras are a striped member of the horse family.(Hoyt 2008) There are 3 species of Zebras. There are Mountains Zebras, Plains Zebras, and Grevy's Zebras.(Wexo 2000)
         Plains zebras live on the grasslands of Africa. Mountains zebras live in dry areas of southern Africa. Grevy's zebras live in the dry areas of northeast Africa.(Zebra 2004)
        Zebras have strong bodies and legs, small hooves, big ears, and stiff manes that are striped.(2004)
        There are differences in how each species look.A Plains zebras body shape is like a horses. Wide black stripes stretch down to the stomach. They are  wider on the rump. Some have dark brownish stripes as well as black.(2004) Mountains zebras stripes are thin and close together on neck and body, on the rump the stripes widen.(2004) Grevy's zebras are the largest zebras. Long narrow head with wide, big ears. Lots of narrow stripes on body and legs. But the stomach is white.(2004)
        When threatened a zebra can choose to run, often using a zig-zag pattern to distract the predator.(Zebra 2003) They can also choose to put up a fight, using powerful jaws and heavy hooves to attack the predator.(2003) Their predators include lions, hyenas, leopards, cheetahs, and hunting dogs.(Janssen)
        Zebras are herbivores.(Zebra 2003) All species are in consistent search of green pastures.(Janssen) In the dry season, they can live on dry grass, but have to be within twenty miles of a watering hole.(Janssen)
        The female zebra carries a single young, call a foal in her body for a year before giving birth.(Hoyt 2008) A new foal weighs between 70 and 80 pounds.(2008) After one hour of being born a foal can stand up and walk.(2008) In a few days a foal begins eating grass. It may gain up to 1 pound each day for the next 2 months.(2008)
        No two zebra's stripes are the same. Like human finger prints. They can even have different stripes on one side compared to the other.(Zebra 2004) The stripes on a zebra can distract and confuse a predator. They can also camouflage each individual zebra.(Zebra 2003)
